Referrals to the five ECMO centres is made using referapatient® – a secure multimedia clinical information exchange. It acts as a digital bridge between healthcare organisations.

The referral system ensures closed loop communication with documentation, recording of telephone calls, retrieval requests and facilitates multidisciplinary team discussions and meetings.

NOTE: the referral ECMO site is for all NHSs. Units in devolved countries should refer to Leicester except if arrangements are in place with one of the other ECMO centres. If unsure, clinicians can discuss his with any centre and will be redirected to the most appropriate.
