Update for anaesthetists and intensivists in training
20 March 2020
We recognise and understand that these are very difficult times for all anaesthetists and intensivists in training and we would like to jointly offer our support as the organisations representing the specialties. We are aware of the pressures and concerns that are being experienced by everyone and would like to provide the following reassurances regarding the training programmes.
We are working closely with the General Medical Council, Health Education England and the devolved nations to ensure flexibility and minimise disruption to the progression of all anaesthetists and intensivists in training. In particular, those who are unable to sit examinations will be able to progress to their next year of training without delay wherever possible. Anyone who is currently undertaking additional time in training in order to complete exams will have that period extended with the opportunity to count any extra time towards their training programme. Further information from the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges can be found here: AoMRC statement on exams
We will also allow the deferral of Units of Training until service pressures have subsided and they can be completed. We have asked schools that training is prioritised for those in the final year of Core Training and ST7 to allow them to exit their Core and Higher Training programmes.
We are working to establish a process to mitigate for the cancellation of ST3 recruitment. There are a number of options for this but, for anaesthesia, it is likely to involve allocation of 12 month posts. We will communicate details as soon as the process for this has been agreed.
We are also looking to allow all anaesthetists in training to work towards achieving equivalence for the new three year Core Training programme (four years for ACCS) as outlined in the 2020 Curriculum. This would enable subsequent recruitment to occur at ST4, allowing career progression to be maintained for doctors in both training and non-training posts. We will provide more information about this in due course.
Finally, we are actively working on resources that will support morale and welfare which will be posted on this website. We will provide further information as soon as we have it so please check this website regularly and share with colleagues.
Thank you for everything you are doing to make sure patients are given the best care possible in difficult circumstances and keep well and stay safe.
